QATAR 2022: SWEDEN OPEN THREE-POINT LEAD

Sweden are the team to beat in Group B of the European qualifiers for next year’s World Cup tournament on Qatari soil after they opened up a three-point lead at the top of the standings. Sweden are ahead of favourites Spain in the running to see who will finish at the top of the group with two games left for the two teams.


With Spain in UEFA Nations League action during the just concluded international break, Sweden knew that they could take a big step towards a place in Qatar next year by beating Greece at home in the latest round of games in Group B as far as the European qualifying campaign is concerned. SWEDEN SUFFER FIRST LOSS IN QUALIFIERS

Sweden have suffered their first loss in the World Cup qualifiers in the UEFA section ahead of Qatar 2022 after they were beaten 2-1 by hosts Greece when the two teams met in Athens on Wednesday night.

Greece stunned their visitors to record their first win of the qualifiers after three successive draws at the start of their campaign in Group B. Apart from Greece and Sweden, the other teams in Group B are leaders Spain, Kosovo and Georgia. Continue reading

Following the signing of French defender Raphael Varane from Spanish La Liga giants Real Madrid this summer, there is a huge cloud of uncertainty over the future of Central defender Victor Lindelof at Manchester United.

Varane’s arrival at Old Trafford is expected to see the Sweden international defender limited to fewer games and it has drawn a big question mark about his long-term stay at the club. Lindelof was Harry Maguire’s defensive partner under manager Olé Gunnar Solskjær last season but he was shaky at the back in some of their games and there were suggestions that United needed a stronger and more aggressive central defender who would be a better partner to Maguire.

EURO 2020: SWEDEN TO FACE UKRAINE

Sweden have setup a last 16 meeting with Ukraine at the ongoing Euro 2020 after they won Group E ahead of favourites Spain on Wednesday. The Swedes needed to beat Poland in their final match to win the group and they did just that though they didn’t have it their own way.

Ahead of the Poland game, Sweden led the group with four points from two matches ahead of Slovakia (three points), Spain (two points) and Poland (one point). Sweden started their campaign in the group with a battling goalless draw against Spain before beating Slovakia 1-0 in the second game thanks to the 77th minute penalty from Emil Forsberg.

MILAN HIT TORINO FOR SEVEN

Sweden football legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic was an obvious absentee as AC Milan put seven past hosts Torino to move closer to Champions League qualification. Milan are on course to return to Europe’s premier club competition almost a decade without Champions League football.

AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli had ruled out Sweden footballer Ibrahimovic from the Torino game after he picked up an injury in the 3-0 win over Juventus at the weekend. Pioli informed reporters about the update on the injury to Ibrahimovicduring his press conference ahead of the game away to Torino which the Rossoneri won 7-0.

IBRAHIMOVIC PENS NEW MILAN CONTRACT

 

AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has signed a new deal at the club that will see him play for the Italian Serie A giants beyond the age of 40.

The 39-year-old Sweden national team icon turns 40 later this year and he has signed a one-year extension to his Milan contract that was initially expected to run out this summer.

LINDELOF IMPRESSES IN MANCHESTER DERBY WIN

Sweden national team centre back Victor Lindelof was one of the standout players for Manchester United as they claimed a good win over neighbours Manchester City in their Premier League clash earlier on Sunday. Sweden player Lindelof was rock solid at the back for Manchester United as he helped his team to keep a clean sheet during the game, which ended in a 2-0 away win for the Red Devils. Victor Lindelof has formed a good centre back partnership with club skipper Harry Maguire and the two players were crucial to the result earned at the Etihad Stadium against hosts Manchester City. Sweden national team defender Victor Lindelof and the other players restricted Manchester City to few chances and that formed the basis for a third league win at Manchester City for Manchester United. The Red Devils were able to put spanner in the works of the winning run by Manchester City. The Premier League leaders had gone on a run of 21 wins in all competitions since December 2020 and were favourites to make it 22 wins on the bounce against Manchester United in the derby but the Red Devils had other ideas. Manchester United are unbeaten away from home in the league this term and they were able to maintain that record with the latest win in the Manchester Derby away from home in the league.

UNITED EYEING REPLACEMENT FOR LINDELOF

Manchester United are reportedly keen to sign a new defender when the transfer window reopens in the summer. This is according to the report from the stables of popular media portal ESPN. It was revealed that the Red Devils have lined up five defenders and are hopeful of signing at least one of those five defenders in the summer. The new defender is expected to replace Sweden national team player Victor Lindel of in the Manchester United starting XI for next season. Sweden player Lindelof has been criticised by a lot of Manchester United fans for his inconsistent displays at the heart of the defence this season.

The report revealed that the new defender won’t force Sweden player Victor Lindelof out of the club in the summer. Manchester United want to retain his services ahead of the 2021/22 season. The new defender is expected to partner Harry Maguire in defence for the upcoming season. OLSEN IMPRESSES IN CUP DEFEAT

 

Sweden national team shot stopper Robin Olsen was the standout player for Everton during their Carabao Cup defeat at the hands of Manchester United. Everton hosted the Red Devils in a Carabao Cup quarterfinal encounter at Goodison Park with a place in the last four of the competition up for grabs. In the end, the Toffees were dumped out of the cup competition after their opponents scored two late goals. Until that point, Sweden international Robin Olsen had impressed in the Everton goal as he kept his team in the game with some excellent saves in the first half. He denied Manchester United striker EdinsonCavani on several occasions in the first half but he could do nothing about the opening goal of the game from the same player.


Cavani, who was lucky to stay on the pitch, gave Manchester United the lead on 88 minutes. The new Manchester United attacker had grabbed Everton centre back Yerry Mina by the throat at the start of the second half. The incident was missed by the match officials and the player went unpunished due to the non-availability of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology. The opening goal from Cavani gave the Red Devils the perfect platform to add a second goal through French international Anthony Martial six minutes into added time. Manchester United secured a last four spot with a comfortable 2-0 win to setup a semi-final clash with city rivals Manchester City who are the holders having won the competition three times on the bounce. IBRAHIMOVIC BACK IN TRAINING AFTER INJURY

 

Sweden football legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic has provided a timely boost for AC Milan on the injury front after he returned to training after an injury layoff. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been one of the best players in the Italian Serie A this season even at the veteran age of 39 and his undoubtedly the push behind Milan and their quest to win the Italian Serie A title this season.


Zlatan Ibrahimovichas been missing for the Rossoneri since the Sweden striker was subbed off during the away game at Napoli. The ex-Sweden international skipper didn’t finish the game which ended in a 3-1 win for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and his Milan team. Since his last appearance against Napoli towards the end of last month, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has missed the last four games in the Italian Serie A as Milan have started to falter in the bid to stay ahead of the chasing pack as far as the league table is concerned.In those three league games without the Sweden football icon, AC Milan have dropped points in two of the four matches without Zlatan, winning the other two games.
