Sweden national team shot stopper Robin Olsen was the standout player for Everton during their Carabao Cup defeat at the hands of Manchester United. Everton hosted the Red Devils in a Carabao Cup quarterfinal encounter at Goodison Park with a place in the last four of the competition up for grabs. In the end, the Toffees were dumped out of the cup competition after their opponents scored two late goals. Until that point, Sweden international Robin Olsen had impressed in the Everton goal as he kept his team in the game with some excellent saves in the first half. He denied Manchester United striker EdinsonCavani on several occasions in the first half but he could do nothing about the opening goal of the game from the same player.
Cavani, who was lucky to stay on the pitch, gave Manchester United the lead on 88 minutes. The new Manchester United attacker had grabbed Everton centre back Yerry Mina by the throat at the start of the second half. The incident was missed by the match officials and the player went unpunished due to the non-availability of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology. The opening goal from Cavani gave the Red Devils the perfect platform to add a second goal through French international Anthony Martial six minutes into added time. Manchester United secured a last four spot with a comfortable 2-0 win to setup a semi-final clash with city rivals Manchester City who are the holders having won the competition three times on the bounce.
