SWEDEN EYEING SEVENTH WIN AGAINST POLAND

Sweden have won six successive games against Poland and they could make it seven wins in a row when they meet in Chorzow next week Tuesday with a place at the World Cup 2022 tournament up for grabs.

The footballing history between Poland and Sweden dates back to June 1974. The two teams had met at the second group stage which decided the two teams for the final and the two teams for the third/fourth spot playoff.

Sweden and Poland were in Group B of the second round alongside hosts West Germany and Yugoslavia. West Germany won the group and qualified for the final where they came from behind to beat the Netherlands 2-1 to win a second title, while Yugoslavia finished last. Netherlands had finished as the top team in Group A. In their first match in the group, GzregorzLato scored the only goal of the game in the first half to give Poland a 1-0 win over Sweden. Poland were runners-up in the group and they beat Brazil 1-0 in the third/fourth spot playoff to secure third spot with Lato getting the all-important goal. He would go on to finish as the Golden Boot winner with seven goals.

Since the 1974 FIFA World Cup tournament in West Germany, Sweden have gone better of Poland including their meeting at the Euro 2020 tournament last summer. The Swedes needed a late goal to secure a 3-2 win over Poland and secure top spot in Group E, while Poland finished last on the group as a result. The result made it six straight wins for Sweden and they can make it seven straight wins if they beat Poland to qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup. The two teams will meet on Tuesday to decide who will pick the one ticket available for the World Cup tournament in Qatar.
