North American hockey was always much more physical than European hockey, whereas the latter was much more about tactics and teamwork. Canadians always played much more individualistically than Soviet hockey teams; Canadian players would get paid for each puck they netted, while a goal from a Russian player was a goal for the entire team – completely different philosophies and playing styles, as you can see.
